Certainly by now everyone’s familiar with the story of the New York terrorists who wanted nothing more than to blow up area synagogues and shoot down military airplanes with anti-aircraft missiles, right?
But even a few days removed from the initial news, the picture’s still pretty fuzzy, to say the least. Not even our most respected media outlets can get the story straight.
The L.A. Times today blares the headline: “Alleged N.Y. terrorist plotters known as regular guys”
Oh yeah, regular guys, eh?
This is from the NY Times story about the fellas:
Mr. Payen, described as a nervous, quiet sort who took medication for schizophrenia or a bi-polar disorder, was unemployed and living in squalor in Newburgh. His last arrest, in 2002, was for assault, after he drove around the Rockland County village of Monsey, firing a BB gun out of the window — striking two teens — and snatching two purses. A friend who visited Mr. Payen’s apartment on Thursday said it contained bottles of urine, and raw chicken on the stovetop.
Now we can’t really speak to what passes for “normal” out in L.A. these days, but we just can’t believe it’s that.
Then there’s a Mr. Onta Williams. Here’s how the L.A. Times’ piece about how normal these guys are described his situation:
It was drugs that landed Onta Williams in prison, where he turned to Islam, said his uncle. When Onta Williams was released about three years ago, he came to live with his uncle.
“I’m the favorite uncle. I’m the gay uncle, so he viewed me as a second mother,” said Richard Williams.
“He’s a follower, not a leader. He’s easy to push around,” [Williams added].
Ah yes. That.
So let’s see. We’ve got one guy with two moms (one of which is his gay uncle) and a schizophrenic person who shoots people with BB guns and keeps jars of urine in his house…
SCARED YET!?
You should be! The plot was WICKED NUTSO! Here’s our favorite detail (so far…because we’re sure this isn’t over (yay!)):
[Cromitie] described the World Trade Center as “the best target” and lamented that it already had been destroyed.
Aw, fiddlesticks! What’s the point, then!?
Cromitie, who’s being described by media as the “brains” and the “ringleader” of the plot, was described by his sister this way:
“Right now, to me he’s, like, the dumbest person I ever came in contact with in my life,” Ms. Walker said. She added that as far as she knew, he was not a Muslim, but said “they do a little time in jail and they don’t eat pork no more.”
Anyway, they’re all off the street, and we can all breathe a big sigh of relief.
The newspapers are going down precisely because they are increasingly irrelevant/uninformed/clearly bigoted.
I get the LA Times to keep up on what the loons are thinking and get a little local news. And the Sunday crossword. Most mornings I am through it in about the first half of the first cup of coffee. Just not that much there.
Hopefully CA will be forced to go ‘shall issue” on CCW…the budget cutbacks of police, release of prisoners and reduction in crimes that lead to prosecution (Contra Costa County has announced it will no longer prosecute assault, battery, theft and the like…reducing the DA caseload by 45%) will make it more imperative to be taking care of one’s self.
With luck, if terrorists come, I can bag my limit…
