That’s right! Venus Williams is out! Of course, we really only use Venus as a way to get to Serena, who’s the Williams sister we really don’t like. (If we were going by weight, only one-third of the problem has been eliminated, but this is about people, not pounds.) Both of them have done their share of completely ungrateful, trash-talking bullshit nonsense over the courses of their careers, but yeah, Serena’s worse.
We won’t rehash (Indian Wells, US Open 2007, any time Richard Williams opens his mouth, for starters). OK, done rehashing.
As is typical, the good people who cover these matches (in this case, the AP) made excuses for Venus’s loss. To wit:
The seven-time Grand Slam champion was playing for the third straight day. She lost the first set of her second-round match against Lucie Safarova on Wednesday before play was suspended because of darkness. Williams saved a match point before beating Safarova on Thursday.
She was also stretched to three sets in the first round.
Boo hoo. It’s professional sports. Grow the fuck up.
Serena, though not playing her best, has continued to advance. She plays 26-year-old Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez who until this year had never gotten past the first round at Roland Garros. Is this Martinez Sanchez’s year? Doubt it. But hopefully she’ll take a cue from her fellow Spaniard and dominate.

I can’t wait for the next Williams article post her (Serena’s) true colours coming through at the US Open.
