On an otherwise pretty dreary day, we went a’scouring for some real news — something we don’t usually see. Laura Bush likes the idea of another woman on the Supreme Court; yawn. Republicans are mounting another vicious attack on Barack Obama: he was on vacation! In FRANCE! More yawning.
We read the always-reliable USA Today (eight minutes cover-to-cover!), and even glanced at the LA Times. Nothing. So after another sip of the grog, we sailed over to CNN.com. And AVAST! Look at this headline!
“Sweden’s ‘Pirate Party’ takes EU seat”
Aye! You bet your hornpipe we’ll be clicking that link.
Unfortunately, then this happened:
A Swedish political party which wants to legalize file-sharing on the Internet scored a surprise victory Sunday when it took a seat in the European parliament.
The Pirate Party won 7.1 percent of the Swedish vote to claim one of the country’s 18 seats in the European parliament.
“Together we have changed the landscape of European politics,” Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge told file-sharing news Web site TorrentFreak after the win.
Hey, that’s great that you changed the landscape of European politics (note: you probably didn’t), but imagine how much you could’ve actually changed the landscape if you were an actual pirate party.
Yeah, you’re really gonna throw the European parliament into disarray talking about file-sharing. Modern day pirates…
Worst. Pirates. Ever.
