The man who lasted literally one game as a Monday Night Football announcer because he couldn’t keep his overt racism off the air is officially out as a member of a group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams.
Why? you ask. Well, because of his overt racism. Duh. Turns out black athletes aren’t too keen on playing for someone with a history of saying negative things about black people. Imagine that! Anyway, the point is: what was Rush Limbaugh’s response to his ouster? Well, he complained and blamed other people — just like a whiny liberal!
Actual headline from ESPN: “Limbaugh blames others for Rams bid ouster”
ST. LOUIS — Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh is blaming others for being dropped from the group trying to buy the St. Louis Rams.
On his syndicated show Thursday, Limbaugh said he was approached by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts earlier this year about participating in a Rams bid.
He also said Checketts assured him his involvement as a minority investor had been vetted by the NFL.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay both expressed misgivings this week about Limbaugh’s involvement. Late Wednesday, Checketts said Limbaugh had been dropped from the bid.
Limbaugh says he believes he has been made an example by a players’ union seeking leverage in talks over a new collective bargaining agreement. And he says he believes what happened to him was an illustration of “Obama’s America on full display.”
Whatever, Limbaugh.
We’re not gonna get into this nonsense too much, but it is worth noting that what happened has absolutely nothing to do with living in “Obama’s America.” Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
See, sports leagues are like little fancy clubs where all the members get to choose who else can join. These rich white guys don’t tend to like fat pill-popping racist blowhards. Hell, let’s call it the “Marge Schott” rule.
Sure Marge Schott owned the Reds, but as soon as she started calling Eric Davis and Dave Parker her “million-dollar niggers,” and defending Adolf Hitler, well, the other owners had enough. First they suspended her, but in pretty short order she was essentially forced to sell her interest in the team.
(Incidentally, all that happened in the mid-90s — undoubtedly emblematic of Bill Clinton’s America.)
Sports are a billion-dollar industry in this country, and surprisingly a team’s image and PR actually matter. Rush’s being dropped had nothing to do with the players union’s bargaining; he was dumped because he’s divisive, because he seems to be racist and because, even on his best days, he’s unstable. But hey, keep on whining, keep on blaming other people, and by all means, don’t ever stop trying to become an NFL owner.
