What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding, anyway? From the Washington Post:
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn’t change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.
You read that correctly. The Catholics are so anti-gay marriage that they’ll let everyone else in the city who needs their services suffer if the gays get to marry.
The D.C. city council is being surprisingly not wimpy about the whole thing.
“If they find living under our laws so oppressive that they can no longer take city resources, the city will have to find an alternative partner to step in to fill the shoes,” [At Large Councilman David A.] Catania said.
And this is great:
[C]ouncil member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) referred to the church as “somewhat childish.”
Exactly. We’ve said this before but it bears repeating: Catholics think an omnipotent man in the sky created the world in six days but for some reason needed a seventh day to rest.
“Are they really going to harm people because they have a philosophical disagreement with us on one issue?” Cheh asked. “I hope, in the silver light of day, when this passes, because it will pass, they will not really act on this threat.”
WWJD? Deny you a hot meal because the District allows gay marriage.

Blessed are the poor unless we have to hire gay people and give their gay partners medical insurance.
