Seems to me that the numbers were based on a series of questions: “Would you back Sarah Palin?” and “Would you back Mittens Romney?” rather than “Who’s your first choice?”

The point, though, is that something that “complex” can’t go on a pie chart — hence USA Today’s exclusive use of pie charts.
