You might want to check your calendars, folks, because it’s starting to feel like 1950 around here! Virginia’s new wingnut governor, Bob McDonnell, introduced an important item yesterday declaring that April is Confederate History Month in the Commonwealth.
Honoring slave owners, secession and a war that ripped the union apart has long been a point of contention in the south because, for some strange reason black people don’t seem too keen on honoring the same people who imprisoned them for generations! WTF, black people!?
But leave it to Bob McDonnell to revive an initiative that, according to the Washington Post, had been completely dormant for eight years:
McDonnell said Tuesday that the move was designed to promote tourism in the state, which next year will mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war. McDonnell said he did not include a reference to slavery because “there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states. Obviously, it involved slavery. It involved other issues. But I focused on the ones I thought were most significant for Virginia.”
Ah yes, it’s about TOURISM! People across the south had just been dying to go to Virginia, but really had no reason to before. Now with Confederate History Month, they can hit Alexandria with hopes of also maybe being able to hit a black person! They can travel to Manassas and reminisce about the good old days when other human beings were bought and sold, and cotton was king!
